An outstanding Early Victorian brooch, circa 1860. It is most likely French in origin, judging from the exquisite enamelling and fancy goldwork. It is 18ct yellow gold and has 10 cabochon rubies in a circle and one more in the centre. The enamel is a mix of heavenly blues and whites and has come away in parts to reveal the gold underneath, which I don’t think detracts that much from the brooch because the gold which you can see coming through is so pretty. This has been reflected in the price. The brooch fastens with a pin and gold safety chain.
